How to make your new apartment feel like home

Moving day has come and gone, and you’ve almost unfinished unpacking your boxes and settling into your new apartment. Now the fun starts. How can you make your new place feel like a home?

Sure, you may not own your rental, but there’s no reason it can’t feel like it’s uniquely yours! There are plenty of ways to spruce up your apartment and add a personal touch. You can do this very simply, without having to make major changes or damage walls.

You don’t want to make any irreversible changes to your rental apartment, but that doesn’t mean you can’t add your own personal style.

A rule of thumb? When in doubt, ask. If there’s something you want to do to your apartment but you’re not sure how your landlord or property manager will feel about it, the best thing to do is just ask!

With a little extra effort, you can make your apartment feel like home. Here are some of our tips:

Hang Art or Personal Photos

Art adds character to any space, and since it’s so personal, the art you choose for your apartment will say a lot about you. Decorating your apartment with art is a great way to express yourself and make a space feel more like home. You can also decorate your apartment with photos of your friends and family. Surrounding yourself with art you love and special memories will help you feel more at home.

But be sure to hang with care! When it comes to adding anything to your apartment’s walls, you want to make sure not to damage the paint or the wall itself. We recommend using less permanent solutions like Command strips, this will help to prevent damage to walls or paper.

Maximize Your Storage

Whether you’re living in a bachelor apartment or a three bedroom apartment, chances are you have things to store. Some buildings offer storage lockers for a modest fee. If you don’t have one, then no problem! There are a lot of ways to maximize storage space regardless of your apartment’s size or layout. If you need extra closet space, invest in a standing wardrobe. You can also find furniture with storage space, such as couches or ottomans that open up for extra storage, or beds with drawers. Consider using inexpensive shelf dividers in the kitchen to help you store more dishes.

Having enough space to comfortably store all of your things will save you a lot of stress. And having things set up specifically for your belongings makes an apartment feel uniquely yours.

Plants. Lots of plants.

Bring the outdoors in! Did you know that having plants in your home is good for your mood? Studies have shown that indoor plants can improve your mood, reduce stress levels, and boost productivity by up to 15%. There are so many science-backed health benefits of having plants in your apartment, such as improving air quality.

Don’t forget to water them regularly though, and be sure to protect your apartment from any potential damage, like water overflow.

Plants bring life to a space. If you don’t exactly have a green thumb, that’s okay – succulent plants are low maintenance and a great way to include some greenery in your apartment.

Add your own accessories and decor

Decorate your apartment with small collectibles, accessories and unique decor to add creative flair. The more you style your apartment in line with your own tastes, the more it will feel like home. This looks different for everyone – you know what kind of decor suits you best!

Make it cozy with textiles

Textiles add warmth to any home and are a great way to make a space feel cozier. Sometimes, adding a simple area rug can completely change the look and feel of a room. Throw pillows, blankets, and curtains are also great for adding a little extra character. Adding these small touches to your new apartment can have a big impact!

Take pride in your space

It’s your apartment now, so look after it respectfully as if it were your own! At the end of the day, taking pride in your new apartment and taking good care of it is going to help it feel like a home.

Your apartment should feel like home. With a little effort and creativity, you can turn your rental into a cozy oasis.
